They say rain is the great equalizer, and in Monza for the 2008 Italian Grand Prix, it was certainly the truth. Sebastian Vettel became the youngest winner of a Formula 1 race when he took the top spot on the podium for Scuderia Torro Rosso, followed by McLaren's Heikki Kovalainen in second place and BMW's Robert Kubica in third.
Ferrari seemed to completely disintegrate in the inclement weather at their home track, finishing sixth and ninth, which allowed McLaren's second and seventh place finishes to erode their lead in the constructor's championship, now standing at a close 134 to 129 lead for the Italians.
Lewis Hamilton still leads the driver's championship in spite of his penalty from the Belgian GP (the appeal of which was denied this week), with Ferrari's Fellipe Massa close behind, and Kubica takes over third place. BMW's Polish sleeper just might end up being this year's champion, but Hamilton and Lewis will have to drop quite a few points for him to scramble to the top with only 4 races remaining.

Drama following the grand prix at Spa Francorchamps, as the FIA see fit to strip Lewis Hamilton of his victory for not properly handling a pass in a chicane where he piloted his McLaren Mercedes through the runoff area. To most eyes, it looked as if he'd done everything right, choosing to go off track rather than collide with Kimi Räikkönnen's Ferrari, but the stewards disagreed, imposing a 25-second penalty 2 days after the incident in question.
The offical results now stand with Hamilton taking third, behind Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Nick Heidfeld of BMW.
It's a true shame the FIA felt the need to impose a penalty for what was, at the end of the day, truly competitive racing. Hamilton and Räikkönnen battled back and forth for the next few laps; both ceding their leading position to the other through offs and spinouts, until ultimately Räikkönnen pushed too hard and nosed the F2008 into the wall. Some of the most exiting F1 action in years ending up being marred by a questionable decision two days later just seems petty.
McLaren Mercedes are appealing the decision, and I hope—though I'm highly doubtful—it'll be overturned. Regardless of the outcome at this point, however, one seems to have to put yet another asterisk after the results of a 2008 season race.

Valencia, Spain sees its very first Formula 1 stop as it hosts the 2008 European Grand Prix. The nearly 5.5 Km course sports 25 turns, and certainly put the drivers to the test as they were forced to quickly memorize the layout during practice and qualifying.
Once learned the track certainly was a dynamic place to hold a race, unfortunately, however, it did lack ample passing zones, and qualifying positions played a large role in the outcome.
Felipe Massa took top honors for Ferrari, but his teammate Kimi Räikkönnen's race echoed Massa's in Hungary - an engine failure taking the Finn out of the running near the 2/3 point. McLaren's star Lewis Hamilton came in second, and BMW's Robert Kubica rounded out the podium. The driver's championship still stands much as it did last round, with Hamilton leading the way, with Massa and Räikkönnen behind.
In the constructors, McLaren continues to erode Ferrari's lead, but the Scuderia shop remains on top. BMW remain in third place thanks to continued high finishes by Kubica.

Ferrari falter at the Hungaroring, leaving Fillipe Massa watching from the sidelines through the smoke of his blown engine with just three laps remaining as McLaren sail on to victory - but this time it's Heikki Kovalainen leading the way for his first-ever F1 victory. Toyota's Timo Glock claimed 2nd place following an impressive qualifying performance, and Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönnen completing the podium.
Lewis Hamilton was showing strong for McLaren, but a blown tire dropped him 8 places as he was forced to limp back to the pits for fresh rubber. He remains in the lead of the driver's championship, but Ferrari loom ever closer with Räikkönnen and Massa both within 8 points of his total.
The constructors championship standings remain the same, with Ferrari in front but by 8 fewer points than last round over closing McLaren. BMW earned only a single point in Hungary, a dismal showing after a season that so far has been looking great.

Lewis Hamilton makes it two in a row in Hockenheim, sharing the podium with Massa in 3rd place, and a surprise showing from Renault's Nelson Piquet Jr. taking 2nd. The result breaks the three-way tie for the driver's championship, which Hamilton now leads, with Räikkönen and Massa close behind. Bringing up fourth in the closely contested driver's race is BMW's Robert Kubica, who at 48 points trails 1st place Hamilton by only 10 points.
Räikkönen also finished in the points, however, along with Kovalainen, Heidfeld, and Kubica; adding points to all three of the constructor leaders' totals; Ferrari though are in a fairly strong lead, with a 16 point gap to 2nd place.
The otherwise uneventful Hockenheimring stint was shaken up by Timo Glock's collision with the pit wall, which closed the pit during a critical fueling break. The safety car and refueling stops stacked up the grid again behind leading Hamilton, but the Brit kept his composure and the lead to bring the win home.

The Magny-Cours race in France concluded the first half of the 2008 Formula 1 season with Ferrari's Filipe Massa standing atop the podium, with Kimi Räikkönnen taking second place in a 1-2 finish for Scuderia's race team, and Jarno Trulli in third for Toyota—a great finish for the Japanese factory team. Hekki Kovalainen finished in the points to keep McLaren in the constructor race, but there was no change for the England-based team in the standings; they remained behind Ferrari in first and BMW-Sauber in second.
Two weeks later at a wet Silverstone, the British GP saw their native Lewis Hamilton take top honors. Nick Heidfeld continued a great run he's been enjoying for the last few races in the #2 spot on the podium, and in a reinforcement of the idea that the rain changes everything, Ruebens Barrichello took 3rd in the otherwise weak Honda works car.
In the wet conditions, tire strategy played a key role as the teams made bold choices about intermediate or full-wet tires in the latest third of the race, and questions about the wisdom of McLaren's choices in particular were answered in a manner that left no doubt they knew what they were doing; McLaren was the only constructor with two cars finishing in the points.
The upshot of all that was a three-way points tie for first place in the driver's championship. Each of Hamilton, Massa, and Räikkönnen have 48 points, but they are ranked in that order due to the tiebreaker rules and Hamilton having more higher-placed finishes than his counterparts. BMW's Kubica trails by a scant 2 points for fourth place in the driver's.
Ferrari remain 14 points ahead of second place BMW in the constructor points, with McLaren just 10 points behind them.

Information has been out for a while on the Tweel, but more recently Michelin has been shipping working models for low-load, low-speed applications. Vibration and noise issues are keeping the revolutionary wheel-tire combo away from passenger cars for the moment, but since the military is also interested, advances may come sooner than later.

Audi again win Le Mans 24 Hours, making the German automaker good for 8 out of the last 9 runs of the famous endurance race. Kristensen, McNish, and Cappelo were at the wheel of the #2 R10 TDI, giving McNish his first win since 1998. Peugeot fought hard for the LM P1 win, but had to settle for the 2nd and 3rd places in that class.
LM P2 saw the Porsche Spyders in a 1-2 showing. GT1 was taken by Aston Martin, and GT2 was dominated by Ferrari with and impressive 1-2-3-4 victory.

A costly mistake for Hamilton in the pit lane opens the track for BMW's Robert Kubica. Hamilton's McLaren-Mercedes collided with the Ferrari of Kimi Räikkönen, ending the day for both drivers.
Hamilton will take a 10 grid spot penalty at the French grand prix along with Nico Rossberg, who crashed into the back of Hamilton's disabled car in the same pit lane incident.
BMW sailed on to collect first and second with Kubica's first win of the season and Nick Heidfeld scoring more points for the constructor, changing both the driver and constructor championship standings dramatically. Kubica now leads the world championship over Hamilton, and BMW is now in striking distance of leading Ferrari, with McLaren bringing up third in the manufacturer race.

The Istanbul Grand Prix saw Massa, Hamilton and Räikkönen take the podium, with Kubica and Heidfeld taking 4th and 5th places respectively - another strong showing from BMW.
The following fortnight at Monaco tossed Räikkönen out of the points, but the top three looked familiar - Hamliton, Kubica and Massa.
Nick Heidfeld also failed to finish in the points, but the upshot of the European GP season so far sees Ferrari out to a comfortable lead at 69 points, while McLaren and BMW continue to scrap for second in the constructors championship, still just a single point separating the teams.

The podium in Spain held Räikkönen, Massa, and Hamilton; Ferrari with another 1-2 win puts Kimi Räikkönen in top spot for the driver's championship, with Lewis Hamilton and Robert Kubica in 2nd and 3rd respectively, just one point apart. That standing is echoed in the constructor standings, Ferrari leading but with BMW besting McLaren Mercedes by a single point.
One heart-stopping moment during the race found Heikki Kovalainen's car under the tire barrier after a straight-in shunt following a rim failure. The spectacular blowout and resulting accident left the Finn no worse for wear, and he is expected to race in Turkey as scheduled.

Bahrain sees Ferrari's second straight win, and the second powerful result from BMW. Massa and Räikkönen for Scuderia Ferrari, and Heidfeld and Kubica for BMW-Sauber, finishing in that order, gained each team big points in the constructor's championship, but BMW now edge out Ferrari by a single point overall. McLaren, leading after Malaysia two weeks ago, is now in third place in what promises to be a close contest for the 2008 season.
Kimi Räikkönen leads the driver's championship after three rounds, with Nick Heidfeld a scant 3 points behind.

Just got back from the GLQC winter driving event at Gull Lake, near Brainerd, MN. Photos are in the gallery, and I also finally uploaded a video shot from the back seat of my car on last year's track at the same event.
Sign up and come along next year! You'll learn a lot and will have a great time. You might even get to see me make Ugly Bumper uglier, like I did this year, moments after I ran out of awesome. (Most cars don't have the clearance problems mine does, and I have a damaged bumper cover I install specifically for these events).

Youtube has a video shot during the ice driving events held by the Glacier Lakes quattro Club at Lake Cynthia in Minnesota. Previously mentioned here, these events give winter drivers a chance to hone their skills before braving the far more dangerous highways with the lesser-skilled.
Look fun? It is! Watch here for news of similar events and go sign up when you can. You'll learn a lot and have a great time while you do.
UPDATE: For even more fun, here's the BMW-Sauber 2007 F1 car doing the same thing. See? You don't even need all wheel drive.
